שאלות ותשובות

1. What is a hackathon?

At its core, a hackathon is a competition. While the concept started in computer science, hackathons have been transposed across many fields from education to marketing. The central premise is to have a diverse group of minds come together and compete to create the best solution to a single problem. It’s a competition for the greater good!

2. What is the challenge?

While the exact challenge will be released during the Hackathon Launch on March 13, 2021, the overarching theme of the Hackathon will be Access to Justice. Our sponsors will come together in the days leading up to the hackathon to identify a problem/challenge that they all see the need to be resolved. The challenge will be a problem that lawyers, clients, or society face every day and would benefit from resolving.

3. What is the level of time commitment?

There are two mandatory events in the Hackathon where all members of your team need to be present: 1. Hackathon Launch on Saturday March 13, 2021 (time TBD, but likely from 11:00AM – 1:00PM EST). ‣ Keynote speaker ‣ Overview of Hackathon structure & mentorship component ‣ Challenged announced 2. Hackathon Pitch Day & Awards Day on Saturday March 20, 2021 (time TBD, but likely from 2:00PM – 5:00PM EST). ‣ Each team will deliver their 5-minute project pitch ‣ Adjudication committee will deliberate winners / Keynote speaker ‣ Announcement of 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners The Hackathon also offers a minimum of 1 hour of mentorship with a legal innovation expert. While it is not mandatory, we encourage everyone to take advantage of this amazing resource and to make connections with the expert assigned to your team. On March 12th, 2021 the French LPP program will also be hosting a bilingual Pitching Workshop which will be tremendously beneficial as teams prepare to pitch their final project. This is not mandatory, but remember that delivery is everything.

4. How much time do I need to spend on the Hackathon project?

You should work on your project as much as you think is necessary. Things to consider when planning your team’s time commitment include: the comprehensiveness of your solution, the final 5-minute pitch, and the opportunity to win cash prizes, access to the world-class Legacy Conference, and free access to the Entrepreneurial Mindset Certificate (see FAQ #5 for more details).

5. What do I get out of it?

We can think of many benefits to participating in the Hackathon, but here are a few that come to mind: 1. A chance to develop a solution that can become a real business opportunity or social benefit project. 2. The chance to win up to $2,000 in cash for 1st place, $1,250 for 2nd place and $750 for 3rd place. 3. One-on-one mentorship with some of the best legal innovators in Canada who are entrepreneurs, partners, founders, former Attorney Generals and can become key connections throughout your career. 4. A chance for your team to win free access to the Entrepreneurship Hub’s Entrepreneurial Mindset Certificate program currently valued at $375. (1st place) 5. A chance to gain exclusive access to uOttawa’s very own Legacy Conference, specifically, their VIP networking event on March 26th, 2021. (1st and 2nd place) 6. Bragging rights!

6. How is the winner selected?

The winner will be selected by the Adjudication Committee which will be made up of representatives from our sponsors. We will outline specific criteria at the start of the Hackathon.

7. Who can be on a team?

We want to make the event as inclusive as possible and encourage inter-disciplinary and bilingual teams (but final project pitches will be in English). Legal innovation needs all types of minds, not just lawyers! Therefore, we only have three requirements to participate: 1. Your team must be between 3-5 students. 2. Every member of the team must be a currently registered student at a Canadian University. 3. At least one member of the team must be a currently registered student at a Canadian law school.

8. Does our project/proposed solution have to be technology related?

No, a proposed solution can be technology driven but it does not have to be. Legal innovation is not just about technology, it is about rethinking policy, procedures, business models, client-lawyer relationships and much more. It is up to you to decide how to best address the challenge based on your team’s skills.

9. What if I don’t have a team but want to participate?

If you don’t have a team you can register as an individual and if we get enough individual participants we will put you in touch to create a new team. The number of individual registrants is out of our control, so we cannot promise we will find you a team.
